Trigger finger, or stenosing tenosynovitis, is a very common condition. Straightforward to diagnose, trigger finger is present when one of the fingers (or thumb) bends or straightens with a snap. This is caused by degeneration, enlargement and inflammation of a tendon in the thumb or the finger. This prevents the tendon from sliding freely in its sheath.
Recommended non-surgical treatments are all focused on reducing inflammation, but the core of the problem is the enlargement of the tendon. So, these strategies may “work” in that they reduce inflammation, but they’re not complete solutions as they are not healing the tendon itself.
If you fail anti-inflammatory treatments, you then get bumped up to surgical treatments. There are two types of surgical intervention, both of which have risks of damaging the tendons or other sensitive tissues. Our treatment, at Functional Pain Relief, is a non-surgical approach called Shockwave. Shockwave uses sound energy to reduce the degenerated cells in the tendon. Thus allowing the tendon to regenerate in a healthy way. When the tendon heals it again moves freely without pain or clicking.
